How do you connect an AI assistant to ERP and CRM systems?
An AI assistant connects to ERP and CRM systems through an MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector: a small server that gives it a set of precise tools, such as finding an order or reading a stock level. The assistant does not see the whole database: it can only use the tools provided, under the user's credentials. Adding a capability means adding a tool, with no change to the business system itself.
Can the AI assistant change data in our ERP?
The AI assistant changes data only if you decide it should, and normally not at first. Phase one is read-only. Write access follows after testing, through the ERP's standard business operations rather than direct table writes, which would skip its integrity checks. Actions that cannot be undone can require approval from a person.
Does our on-premise ERP have to be exposed to the internet?
An on-premise ERP does not have to be exposed to the internet when the connector runs on the user's PC: it reaches the system over LAN or VPN, like your usual client. The trade-off is that a local connector works in the assistant's desktop app, not in the browser or on mobile. If web use matters, we assess a remote connector and its security implications.
Which business systems can be connected to an AI assistant?
A business system can be connected to an AI assistant when it offers programmatic access to its data: APIs, web services or, failing that, a database that can be queried read-only. We do not answer from a catalog because version, configuration and customizations decide it: the first task is testing on staging what your system exposes and within which limits.
